The canyons of Skagafjörður. – The wide valley of Skagafjörður is dominated by Héraðsvötn, the large glacial river flowing slowly in its bottom. Héraðsvötn originate in Hofsjökull glacier in the central highlands and before they „settle“ down at the flat bottom of Skagafjörður the two rivers forming the big river run in rapids and form impressive canyons in the two valleys running south from Skagafjörður, Austurdalur and Vesturdalur. We drive from Akureyri to Skagafjörður stopping at Kotárgil in Norðurárdalur before driving to Gilsbakki in Austurdalur. In Austurdalur we stop at Merkigil canyon, one of Iceland most impressive canyons, and hike across the canyon.Austurdalur valley. A deserted valley except for one farm still active that we can observe on the other side. The area is renownded for its history. The, now abandoned farm Merkigil, was a home to the first woman in Iceland who got a medal for housevifeing.
