Service Description
Flateyjardalur is a continuation of Fnjóskadalur valley leading north to the ocean. The valley gets it name from the island Flatey which linger just out of reach when you arrive at the coast. Permanent habitation ended in the valley in the 1950‘s but several of the abandoned houses are used as sommerhouses by the descendans of the last farmers. In Flateyjardalur you can experience many different habitats with wetlands, shrubbage and heathlands. Bird life is diverse. The valley keeps many geological remnants of the exstensive glaciation which covered Iceland more than 10 thousand years ago. The Flateyjardalur trip takes 6-10 hours pending hikes we take. The shorter version includes driving to the coast and few shorter hikes to study the surrounding nature.
